Know your energy

We strongly believe you should be armed with as much information as possible so that you can make the most informed decisions for your business. That’s why we have chosen to publish the information below which will give you a guide as to what to expect to pay for your energy depending on how much you use. If you’re paying more than the prices below then you need to take action – you’re paying too much.

Electricity

Electricity prices will always be more expensive than gas. This is primarily because fuels, including gas, are used during the generation of electricity. Even though more of the UK’s power needs are being met through renewables like wind farms, we still heavily rely on gas powered turbines to meet the country’s electricity needs.

How your bill is calculated

Reading your energy bill can cause you headaches and not only because of the balance at the bottom. We’ve taken the time to break down the charges you’re likely to see, and what they mean:

ChargeWhy it’s there
Unit ChargeBy far the most important charge on your bill. The Unit Charge is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). The more energy you consume, the higher your bill, that’s why it’s important to secure a low Unit Rate.

To give you an idea of how much energy a kWh is:

Every electrical item has an energy rating in watts. For example your television could be rated at 100 watts.

A kilowatt is a thousand watts.

If you operated your television constantly for 10 hours you will have used 1 kilowatt hour.
Standing ChargeDisplayed as a daily or monthly cost the standing charge doesn’t change based on your consumption. Standing Charges are there for two reasons. Firstly to pay the costs of maintaining the meter and secondly so the supplier still generates revenue even if you’re not using power.
CCL (Climate Change Level)CCL is a tax on non-domestic energy consumers in the UK. It is applied before VAT.
The aim of CCL is to provide an incentive to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
VAT (Value Added Tax)Speak to your accountant for this one!

One thing to be aware of is that if you are a low consumer you will only be charged 5% VAT.

The supplier applies what is known as a “de-minimis” level. For electricity this is consumption of 33kWh per day and for gas 145kWh per day. If you’ve consumed less than this per day during the billing period you’ll only be charged 5% VAT.

If you’re a charitable organisation you should also see this reflected on your bill with 5% VAT.

If you’re a particularly large consumer, or you’ve recently gone through an industry change to upgrade your meter to Half-Hourly, you may see additional charges on your bill. If you agree a bespoke contract through us we’ll explain what each charge means.
